Accounts U Follow are Destroying Your Reach
One irrelevant unfollow = One useful impression you didn't have before
UNFOLLOW DEAD ACCOUNTS
WHY?
The algo learns from who you follow
It impacts who sees your posts (and what you see)
Non-existent connections = weaker reach
If they haven’t posted anything in 3–6 months… what's the point?
If you haven’t interacted with them in forever… what are you getting out of it?
If it’s just a bot account that only reposts… It’s harming you more.
These inactive and dead accounts are KILLING your reach. Let me explain how and what you can do to fix it 👇🏽

WHY UNFOLLOWING MATTERS
Here’s what happens when you follow inactive or irrelevant accounts:
▪ The algo uses that data to decide what you want to see and who sees you
▪ You’re getting empty impressions on timelines of people or even bot accounts who will never engage
▪ You’re missing out on exposure to new, active accounts that might actually care about your content
▪ Your reach-to-engagement ratio stays imbalanced because algo is showing your posts to people based on who (inactive or irrelevant accounts) you’re following
All because you didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings by clicking “unfollow.”
✓ Normalize UNFOLLOWING
Unfollowing doesn’t mean you hate someone.
It means the connection is not currently serving a purpose.
This isn’t a loyalty contest.
This is about showing up for the people who are or will be showing up for you.
Unfollowing some inactive accounts will allow you to follow more active, relevant accounts while keeping your follower-following ratio intact.
[you should only be following about 40% of the people who follow you - signals to the algo that you’re ‘in demand’]

Fun fact:
If a person becomes active again…
you know YOU CAN ALWAYS FOLLOW AGAIN LATER right??? 😛

🚨 OKAY BACK TO HOW TO UNFOLLOW 🚨
HOW TO UNFOLLOW
There’s no perfect tool for this.
Most of the “inactive follower checkers” suck or could peg you as a bot in the algo.
Here’s your cleanup plan:
Go to your Following tab
Scroll down and start evaluating
Unfollow:
▪ Anyone who hasn’t posted in 3–6 months
▪ Anyone you haven’t interacted with in forever
▪ Anyone who doesn’t align with your current content anymore
This one shift alone can refresh your timeline and your reach. Because the algo will show your content to more relevant people based on following data.
Keep your ratio tight.
Keep your audience up-to-date.
Keep your engagement bot-free.
☒ Don’t Get Shadowbanned
X will restrict you if you mass follow/unfollow too fast.
Here’s what NOT to do:
🚫 Don’t unfollow + follow a bunch of people in the same session
🚫 Don’t unfollow accounts you just followed within the last 6–7 days
🚫 Don’t follow people too rapidly
Do it slow and steady.
Give the algo time to adjust.
Otherwise you’ll trigger temporary account restrictions: can’t like, follow or do much.

You’re not being mean. You’re being intentional. And it’s not even permanent.
Make room for new connections.
Unfollow with purpose.
X should never be about ‘if you follow me, i’ll follow you’. Follow only if you like em.
