Following inactive, irrelevant, or bot accounts does real damage.
Here’s why:
→ The algorithm studies who you follow to understand who you are
→ It uses that data to decide who your content should be shown to
→ Dead follows = wasted impressions
→ Wasted impressions = suppressed reach
If someone hasn’t posted in 3–6 months, they’re not helping you.
If you’ve never interacted, they’re not beneficial.
If it’s a repost bot… it’s actively hurting you.
This isn’t personal.
It’s math.
⚙️ NORMALIZE UNFOLLOWING
Unfollowing ≠ hate
Unfollowing ≠ betrayal
Unfollowing ≠ burning bridges
It means:
→ the connection no longer serves a purpose right now
Following isn’t a loyalty program.
This is about relevance.
And you know..
You can always follow them again later!!
FOLLOWER:FOLLOWING RATIO
→ You should be following ~40% of the people who follow you
Why this matters:
↳ Tells the algorithm you’re selective
↳ Shows you’re in demand
↳ Improves who your content gets tested in front of
🧹 The Clean-Up Plan
Forget “inactive follower checker” tools.
Most of them are trash and some can flag your account.
Do this instead:
➤ Go to your Following tab
➤ Scroll manually
➤ Unfollow:
▪ Accounts inactive for 3–6 months
▪ Accounts you never interact with
▪ Accounts that no longer align with your content or direction
That’s it.
One slow, intentional sweep can refresh:
→ your timeline
→ your impressions
→ your reach quality
